Power/Vinyasa Yoga at the USC
Vinyasa yoga
Breathe in, breathe out. That is the heart of vinyasa yoga.
In vinyasa yoga we balance and explore ourselves by connecting the breath and yoga poses. The poses are powerful and dynamic, the focus on breath keeps us mentally present and supports our movements. In the class we also strengthen the muscles by flowing from one pose to the next, connecting them with ‘vinyasas’: A specific set of poses that helps us to flow from one pose to the next. All together this combines into a class with flow, strength and a sense of calm.

Power/Vinyasa Yoga is a powerful and dynamic form of yoga that has been derived from Ashtanga Yoga. It was first developed in the 1930s. In Power Yoga physical poses are adopted in succession, all the time supported by breathing techniques. Poses take the form of a series which can vary from lesson to lesson. Each series forms a dynamic whole which is reminiscent in style to a work-out. By focusing attention on your movement and breathing and being aware of your body, you achieve an effect similar to that achieved by runners. During a series you adopt standing, sitting and lying poses one after another.
Poweryoga
Physical challenge, with only a small tinge of spirituality. This is the aim of poweryoga.
In poweryoga we connect fitness and yoga. We get ourselves in peak physical condition by doing fast-paced sequences that will heat up your body, improve your stamina, flexibility and strength. In the poweryoga classes the focus really is on the physical postures and because of this less on the breath and meditation. This style is the least meditative out of all the yoga styles.
